Practical Post: How My Family Keeps Up On Laundry

All over social media and in real life, people talk about how hard laundry is.. How much there is to do. How often it has to be done. Not enough time to do it all.

Personally, I’ve never understood why anyone complains about laundry, because in our house we’ve had an established routine ever since I can remember. My mother began it many years ago and it’s worked well ever since.

I thought I’d share this routine here, in hopes that it could help you and your family out. Granted, we are a family of four, but I think this routine would work for most other families with multiple loads of laundry every week. (Which is, of course, everyone.)

Monday & Thursday:

On these days we do all the clothes. Dark-colored clothes and light-colored clothes are sorted out, then washed separately to keep the darks from staining the lights. Depending on the amount of clothes worn that week, we may have 2-4 loads of laundry that day. Of course, if you have a larger family, it may be more than that for you.

Tuesday & Friday:

Tuesdays and Fridays are the days we do towels and other household linens. Bath towels, kitchen towels, cloth napkins, and shower curtains/rugs are all washed.

Wednesday:

Everyone washes their sheets at different frequencies, but we do it once a week. All of our sheets and pillowcases are washed on Wednesdays, and blankets could be washed this day too.

Saturday:

We don’t often do laundry on Saturdays, but this would be the perfect day to wash any “special” loads, such as living room blankets or aprons. Or, if anything in your house/clothing gets especially dirty, perhaps you could use this day to do a separate load for those things.

Sunday:

Laundry is never done on Sundays, so we can have a day off.

However, routines aside, the real key to keeping up on laundry is to wash, dry, and fold each load in the same day. Even if you do one load every single day, you will be able to keep up if you complete everything as soon as possible. This also cuts almost all ironing out, as nothing can be wrinkled if it’s not in a pile on the bed!

Also, as soon as something goes into the dryer, add a new load to the washing machine. Keeping things moving is a huge part of laundry!

Do these tips help? Does your family have a laundry routine? I’d love to hear about it in the comments!
