Understanding Why Consistency is Vital to Success

There are many ways that consistency can affect our lives in small to large tasks and their varying outcomes. For example, a consistent schedule of brushing your teeth twice a day, or opening all of the blinds in your home at 7:30 each morning. These tasks are easier to work into everyday life than a more ambitious one, like trying to write a few thousand words a day, or something larger than your schedule permits.

While consistency can be centered around smaller habits or hobbies, it is also heavily present in impactful goals such as cutting off an addiction, or things that are negatively influencing your life. These are all necessary changes to better yourself for something that you are passionate about. But while each  different task has its own difficulty or benefit, the general practice of consistency is vital to reaching goals.

A consistent thirty days of brushing results in no cavities. The outcomes naturally change with your goals. Maybe you couldn’t bear to break your streak of opening the blinds right on the dot, so now you are up and dressed before 7:30, every morning! Maybe you have more of a chance to reach your artistry goals with all those sketches behind you, or now have nearly a 30 thousand word novel written!

These small and large achievements in our everyday life make us happy, and often lead us to feel that we can do anything and everything. While this is an amazing feeling and very helpful sometimes, we must not focus on our own personal gain and success, but that of a greater, everlasting one. When in pursuit of this consistency and sound foundation, we must always go back to the Bible to remind ourselves of what God says about it.

A verse that comes to mind when I think about consistency is Hebrews 10:23,

Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for He who promised is faithful.

Being steadfast in the Word of the Lord is vital to the most triumphant success we could achieve. But even knowing this, sometimes when we are working hard towards a goal, we get burned out, frustrated, and confused. We begin to doubt, wondering why we are working so hard to get what we want. Why do we want it? Will it work out? Is it really worth it? But we know that it is, and we see the reassurance in verses like James 1:6,

But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for he who doubts is like a wave of the sea that is driven and tossed by the wind.

And in Corinthians 15:58,

Therefore, my beloved brothers, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that in the Lord your labor is not in vain.

As we see in these verses, even when we have doubts and falter, our consistency and faith is what we are required and encouraged to have. From spiritual growth to practical outcomes, we see that the only way to truly reach success is if you are consistent in work and training. While your faith may not assist you in brushing your teeth, it is essential for all things that require our effort and interest. As an athlete runs every morning, practicing to win a race, we must practice our habits and hold fast to our faith in order to make a difference.

With our faith as a guide, consistency will reward success in God’s due time.
