The One Thing That Never Changes

“Everything feels like it’s changing.”

I’ve said those words many times. Especially since our family moved overseas, I’ve met with change after change. Some have been good changes, and some have been more negative.

The vast majority of people don’t like change. It’s uncomfortable, most of the time, even if we know the change will help us in the end. It’s difficult to go through something that rocks our world, even a little bit. It’s hard when things are no longer how we’re used to them being.

I’ve met with dozens of changes over the past few years. From having to learn a new language, to watching siblings grow up, to having new rhythms and routines, to growing up myself, change has been everywhere for me.

There have been days I’ve longed to go back to the way things were, days I didn’t feel like I could keep going with all the unfamiliarity of our new life.

Have you ever felt like that? Like everything’s changing, nothing’s the way it was, and you just want to go back to what you know?

It’s so easy to get trapped there.

I’ve had to learn over the past months that there’s one thing that is sure—the Lord. He is a constant God, He never changes one bit. I’ve been thinking about three specific ways He never changes.

1. God Is Everlasting

God was alive in the beginning, way back when the world was created—and He was alive forever before that, too. He never had a point where He started living. He simply always has been.

And He always will be. He’s never going to die, never going to stop existing. No matter what happens, He will always be there. He is eternal.

Psalm 90:2 says, “Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever you had formed the earth and the world, from everlasting to everlasting you are God.” He is everlasting—without a beginning or an end.

That’s so incomprehensible to the human mind, but it’s also very true. This means that no matter what happens, God will be there, He will be over everything that happens, forever and ever.

2. God Is Omnipresent

Not only is God eternal, but He is always right there with us. In fact, He is everywhere on this earth. Nothing escapes His notice. He knows every single thing that happens.

Whenever we call out to Him, He is there with us. Whenever we need Him, He is right there. In the midst of change and uncertainty, knowing that He is always there has encouraged me so much.

Psalm 139:7-10 reads, “Where shall I go from your Spirit? Or where shall I flee from your presence? If I ascend to heaven, you are there! if I make my bed in the depths of Sheol, you are there! If I take the wings of the dawn and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea, even there your hand shall lead me, and your right hand shall hold me.”

We’re never alone, no matter what happens or where we go. God is always with us.

3. God Is The Same

God never wavers in anything. Over all of eternity, His character has remained the same. Over all of eternity, He has remained the loving, merciful, just God we serve.

The Lord is patient, and slow to anger. He is merciful. He wants all of the people He created to come to Him, so that they can be saved.

And He’s also just. He’s fair. He will deal with us all according to His law, and punish or reward us accordingly. He doesn’t show any partiality, and that will never change, either.

He always does exactly what He says He’ll do. If He’s said He will punish sin, He will. If He’s said He’ll save us from sin, He will—and did, through His Son, Jesus. Numbers 23:19 says, “God is not man, that he should lie, or a son of man, that he should change his mind. Has he said, and will he not do? Or has he spoken, and will he not fulfill it?” There are thousands of promises God has made in the Bible—and He will never break a single one of them.

Most importantly, He loves. He is love, actually. God’s love never wavers or changes. It’s a deeper love than any of us could ever understand. It’s completely unfathomable.

But it’s very, very real—and He bestows it on us every single day.

God never changes, and even if everything around us is changing, He never will. That’s what we need to lean on whenever life feels like it’s beating us down. Whenever nothing feels familiar, whenever everything feels like it’s changing overnight.

He is a constant God, no matter what happens.

“Have you not known? Have you not heard? The Lord is the everlasting God, the Creator to the ends of the earth. He does not faint or grow weary; his understanding is unsearchable.” - Isaiah 40:28
