“Therefore produce fruit consistent with repentance.” (Matthew 3:8)
Actions are the best way to show our salvation, and those actions must be consistent if we want to convince others of our true faith and love in Jesus. What are some of the “fruits consistent with repentance”? Humility, gentleness, joy and peace are only a few!
“For many people were giving false testimony against Him, and so their testimonies were not consistent.” (Mark 14:56)
Falsehood is easily detected when our story is inconsistent, just as it was for the people testifying against Jesus. We should watch our words to ensure we’re speaking truthfully and consistently!
“Let what you say be simply ‘Yes’ or ‘No’; anything more than this comes from evil.” (Matthew 5:37)
If we are consistent with our words and actions, we won’t need to say anything besides a simple “yes” or “no.” Others will know that we always do what we say, and won’t want anything more from us than that.
“Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today, and forever.” (Hebrews 13:8)
Before the world came into being and until the end of time, Jesus has always been and always will be exactly the same. He is the ultimate example of consistency!
Hymn:
God is never failing, steadfastly remaining, and always here with us. What better example of consistency could we ever wish for? This hymn, written in the sixteenth century, demonstrates His constancy in all things.
A Mighty Fortress is Our God by Martin Luther.
A
mighty fortress is our God,
a bulwark never failing;
our helper he, amid the flood
of mortal ills prevailing.
For still our ancient foe
does seek to work us woe;
his craft and power are great,
and armed with cruel hate,
on earth is not his equal.
Did
we in our own strength confide,
our striving would be losing,
were not the right Man on our side,
the Man of God's own choosing.
You ask who that may be?
Christ Jesus, it is he;
Lord Sabaoth his name,
from age to age the same;
and he must win the battle.
And
though this world, with devils filled,
should threaten to undo us,
we will not fear, for God has willed
his truth to triumph through us.
The prince of darkness grim,
we tremble not for him;
his rage we can endure,
for lo! his doom is sure;
one little word shall fell him.
That
Word above all earthly powers
no thanks to them abideth;
the Spirit and the gifts are ours
through him who with us sideth.
Let goods and kindred go,
this mortal life also;
the body they may kill:
God's truth abideth still;
his kingdom is forever!
