Jewels of Worth: Thoughtfulness

 By Grace Sweeney

We’ve been learning about thoughtfulness this month. We’ve shared some verses in the articles thus far, but I’d like to share a few more Bible verses with you and also a hymn I found recently which I think is perfect for this month’s theme. So let’s start with the Bible verses.

"And as you wish that others would do to you, do so to them." (Luke 6:31)

We would like others to do small things for us to make us feel better—so why shouldn’t we do the same for others? Luke 6:31 applies to a lot of areas of life, but especially to thoughtfulness. Who doesn’t enjoy a kind smile or word of encouragement? I do, I bet you do, and I’m pretty sure those around you do too.

"Therefore encourage one another and build one another up, just as you are doing." (1 Thessalonians 5:11)

Encouragement is a big part of thoughtfulness. It only takes a few minutes, but just a few words can build someone up. Let’s aim to do it as often as we can.

"Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves. Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others. Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus." (Philippians 2:3-5)

If we are counting others as more important than ourselves, we will be looking for opportunities to be thoughtful toward them. Looking out for others means we will be intentionally thinking about how we can bless others, which is exactly what thoughtfulness is.

Hymn:

Until I looked up hymns on thoughtfulness, I had never read this hymn before—but I love it already!  Let me know what you think by commenting below.

Hold Out Your Hand: by Deamor R. Drake

Hold out your hand in the darkness of sin

Help some poor sad heart the haven to win

Cheer up some soul with a friend’s kind touch

And help all you can be it little or much.

Hold out your hand, hold out your hand

And bid their hearts be strong;

Hold out your hand, hold out your hand,

And help the world along.

Hold out your hand, for the world is a way

Made up of sadness and sorrow each day;

Smiles are a help to the suffering heart,

To laugh at its sadness and make it depart.

Hold out your hand, hold out your hand

And bid their hearts be strong;

Hold out your hand, hold out your hand,

And help the world along.

Hold out your hand, then, wherever you are.

Kind deeds will shine thro’ the darkness afar;

Some sinking soul may its twinkling discern,

Oh, come to the haven and righteousness learn.

Hold out your hand, hold out your hand

And bid their hearts be strong;

Hold out your hand, hold out your hand,

And help the world along.

  1. I feel like I've heard that hymn before... but I don't know where. These are great bible verses that relate well with this months theme! Same with the hymn!
    Thanks for sharing! I look forward to the rest of the posts this month!
