Jewels of Worth: Empathy

“Finally, all of you, have unity of mind, sympathy, brotherly love, a tender heart, and a humble mind.” 1 Peter 3:8

Empathy means to understand others, or to have unity of mind, to be gentle and loving towards others, and help them. This verse pretty much describes empathy without saying the exact word.

“Rejoice with those who rejoice, weep with those who weep.” Romans 12:15

We’re to understand others’ feelings and rejoice with them when they’re glad, and be sorry with those who are unhappy. That’s strong empathy right there.

“This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you.” John 15:12

Loving others the way Jesus did ensures that we’ll have empathy. Jesus is the most empathetic person there is. He understands everything we go through and is ready to help us when we need it. Such a loving Savior. <3

Help Us to Help Each Other by Charles Wesley.

This hymn is one about growing in the empathy Christ had, so that we can better obey John 15:12. Please try to read it slowly and carefully; it’s really quite powerful. (:

Help us to help each other, Lord,

each other's cross to bear;

let each his friendly aid afford,

and feel another's care.

Up into thee, our living head,

let us in all things grow,

and by thy sacrifice be led

the fruits of love to show.

Touched by the lodestone of thy love

let all our hearts agree;

and ever towards each other move,

and ever move towards thee.

This is the bond of perfectness,

thy spotless charity.

O let us still, we pray, possess

the mind that was in thee.
