When You're Overwhelmed

Have you ever faced a time when you feel as if you’re drowning in responsibilities? When life appears full of difficulties and everything seems like it’s caving into itself? When it feels as if you’re in a pool without a railing to hold onto and no way to get out of the water?

If so, you know what it feels to be overwhelmed. It’s overpowering, engulfing, and extremely frustrating, because it often leads us to procrastination and anxiety.

So what can we do then? When our minds are whirling and our head is aching and we have no way to escape from the heaviness of all we have to do?

We need to remember the Word of God when we’re feeling overwhelmed. He has promised us that He will always be there for us, in places like Matthew 28:20 and Deuteronomy 31:8. He also gives us many other reminders. When we’re overwhelmed, let’s remember these amazing promises He has given us throughout His Word.

1: We can cast our anxieties on God.

In Philippians 4:6-7, we are told to “be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all comprehension, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”

While we are banishing our anxiety, this text tells us something else as well. We are reminded to pray with thanksgiving while making our requests. When we do that, God’s peace will surround us and comfort us, and God will help us with our overwhelm.

A lovely hymn to listen to that pertains to this verse is “All Your Anxiety” by Edward H. Joy. It speaks of Jesus and how He comforts us at all times, and is a reassurance that He will help and sustain us in every difficult time.

2: God is our refuge.

Psalm 46:1 reminds us that “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.” He is always there for us, whether we’re rejoicing on the highest mountaintop or grieving in the lowest valley. When we are feeling discouraged, frustrated, and overwhelmed, He is here for us, and He will help us work through every moment, task, and day.

3: We can find rest in Jesus.

In Matthew 11:28-30, Jesus says “Come to Me, all who are weary and heavy-laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.”

Jesus is here for us when we’re tired of pressing on, weary of our work, and exhausted from the duties of the day. He is gentle, caring, and kind, and he will give us rest throughout every trial we’ll ever have to face.

No matter how tired and overwhelmed we feel, God is here for us. He will never leave us or forsake us, and He will always hear our prayers for guidance and help. (Psalms 6:9) We can cast our anxieties upon Him, and He will be our refuge. He will give us rest. And that’s a comfort no overwhelm can ever take away.
